"AIDS fund East-West" (AIDS fund East-West, AFEW) is a Dutch non-governmental humanitarian organization working in public health in the countries of Eastern Europe and Central Asia. The purpose of the "AIDS fund East-West" is reducing incidence and impact of HIV infection among vulnerable groups.
"AIDS fund East-West" (AFEW) was established on December 1, 2001. The organization was officially established in the Netherlands. AFEW strives to maintain its leadership in the field of prevention, treatment, care and support of HIV infection in Eastern Europe and Central Asia as the region is not getting enough help from leading international development agencies.
AFEW is the only international non-governmental organization created specifically to combat HIV epidemic and to do its best to actualize the issue of HIV / AIDS in the socio-political sphere and to facilitate adoption of urgent measures. AFEW activities are done by a team of local and foreign experts in close cooperation with an ever-expanding network of international consultants. AFEW has three regional offices (in Moscow, Kiev and Almaty) and constantly interacts with its headquarters in Amsterdam. Projects in each country are implemented in partnership with national governments and NGOs.
At the heart of AFEW initiatives there is a balance of three interrelated components:
1) AFEW facilitates recovery policy in the region, raises awareness and takes adequate measures;
2) taking into account the need for long-term exposure AFEW aims to increase the capacity and skills of professionals through training, institutional support and development of the activities of national partners;
3) AFEW initiatives mean to provide direct service and support to vulnerable groups. These components are the base for all AFEW programs.
AFEW staff has developed a system of replication and expansion of successful projects, in which all international programs on HIV / AIDS are carried out on the basis of existing best practices, being always adapted to the conditions of a particular region. Currently AFEW implements programs in Georgia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Russia, Tajikistan and Ukraine. Also AFEW develops additional local initiatives in the field of prevention, treatment, care and support of HIV infection where the need appears.
